B&W Y-12 Apprenticeship Program

B&W Y-12 announces the establishment of an apprenticeship program in the following crafts: Boilermakers/Blacksmiths, Carpenters, Electricians, Insulators, Ironworker/Riggers, Outside Machinists/Millwrights, Painters, Pipefitters, Welders, and AC&R Mechanics.

There are approximately 50 openings for the classifications listed above. The starting rate of pay is $19.30 per hour.

Eligibility for admission into the program requires a high school diploma or GED, must be at least 18 years of age, and register, complete, and pass an aptitude test.

Applicants can register for the aptitude test and pick up an application packet beginning Monday, June 9 - Friday June 13, from 6:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Y-12 New Hope Center, 602 Scarboro Rd, Oak Ridge, TN.

Applicants will be required to pay an $18 registration fee for the test (only cashier checks or money orders payable to B&W Y-12 will be accepted).

Job Descriptions

  • Welder
    Sets up and operates shielded metal arc and gas tungsten arc welding equipment and oxygen-acetylene gas cutting and welding equipment according to certain welding specifications. Works in the field or shop on a wide variety of non-repetitive welding. Works from blue prints, sketches, and written or oral instructions. Will be certified on specific welding procedures and must periodically recertify on each.
  • Insulator
    Applies insulating materials to various types of piping, pipeline, tanks, boilers, still towers, and equipment for protective purposes against frosting, heat radiation, absorption, freezing and condensation. Prepares proper mix, or may use ready block or molded insulation.
  • Outside Machinist/Millwright
    Installs, changes the layout, moves and repairs machines and mechanical equipment usually of the heavy type, including stand-by equipment, hydraulic systems, sheave alignment, vibration analysis, conveyors, freight and passenger elevators, power drive equipment, pumps, and other heavy mechanical machinery. Works from floor layouts, blue prints, drawings, sketches, or work orders. Operates machine shop and other fabricating equipment.
  • Electrician
    Inspects, tests, repairs, services, fabricates, alters, and installs a wide variety of electrical power, electronic, and instrumental equipment, including controlling devices and wiring systems, precision mechanical, electro-mechanical, electronic and pneumatic instruments and devices; radiation instruments, x-ray machines, computers, telephone equipment, radio networks, facsimile systems failures, determines necessary corrective action and completes restoration to service. Operates machine tools and complex test equipment as necessary.
  • Ironworker/Rigger
    Rigs and moves extremely heavy equipment, machinery, construction materials, structural steel and fragile apparatus. Sets up and rigs hoisting structures or equipment for erecting or dismantling heavy bulky machines, equipment or other objects. Uses rollers, forklifts, chain blocks and block and tackle using appropriate chains, ropes, or cables to move or lift heavy loads safely. May splice ropes or steel cable by hand. Loads and properly secures objects on transport equipment. Fabricates, erects and assembles structural steel. Works with both mobile and fixed cranes. Involves strenuous physical exertion and activities associated with material or equipment movement.
  • Air Conditioning / Refrigeration Mechanic
    Installs, troubleshoots, repairs, performs routine and preventative maintenance of, and overhauls industrial, commercial, and domestic refrigeration and air conditioning equipment, including all auxiliary equipment, controls, and related accessories. Performs soldering and brazing tasks as encountered in refrigeration work.
  • Painter
    Prepares metal, wood or other surfaces for the application of paint, varnish, and/or other paint materials for decorative or preservation purposes. Mixes and blends paints and pigments and applies through use of immersion equipment and various types of application such as brush, roller, and spray guns. May operate bake oven and do sign painting. Requires operation of mechanical equipment, such as work platforms, vertalifts, forklifts and mobile scaffolds.
  • Carpenter
    Constructs, repairs, alters, and performs carpentry work in plant building offices and other structures. Builds benches, ladders, dollies, scaffolding, and similar wooden forms and equipment. Performs other carpentry tasks as may be assigned such as building cabinets, shipping containers and racks, roofing, shoring ditches, fencing, and other related items.
  • Pipefitter
    Lays out, installs and repairs a variety of piping systems including steam, water, air, industrial gasses, lubricants, caustic, acids and other corrosive chemicals. Works from drawings, sketches, field dimensions and oral instructions. Works with a number of different valves, gauges, gaskets, packing materials, and piping materials including stainless steel, black iron, galvanized, copper, PVC, and glass.
  • Boilermaker / Blacksmith
    Lays out and performs all duties involved in the assembly and maintenance of tube and shell type heat exchangers and steam power boilers. Sets up and operates various types of power or hand equipment needed in the assembly, repair, or alteration of heat exchangers or boiler parts. Assembles heavy gauge boiler and header plates, installs flues, retubes boilers and may install shell and tube exchangers which are not an integral part of a piping system.
